Dungeon Basics

There are a lot of things happening in dungeons and trials. And in a lot of stressful situations, it can become hard for a newer player to make the right judgment calls within a second.
These are some dungeon guidelines that should help you cover the basics and focus on playing your role and reacting to the stuff around you.

Play your role

While multipurpose builds are good for solo play, in group content, you want to be aware of your character’s role in the group and play accordingly.

  • As a tank, you want to taunt (aggro) enemies, stack and debuff them, and buff the group.
  • As a healer, you keep the group alive and provide buffs and debuffs
  • As a damage dealer (DD) you focus on dealing damage.

Regular dungeon groups have 1 tank, 1 healer and 2 DDs, but that recommended composition isn’t set in stone, some groups run with 1 tank and 3 DDs,

Stay as one team

Don’t rush forward, try not to fall too much behind, stick together as one group

That’s the ideal position you want to achieve in most fights. The tank faces the boss away, absorbing all the damage, the DDs are tightly stacked behind the boss (could be a trash pack too), getting all the heals and buffs, with the healer right behind them, healing the tank through DDs

Don’t stand behind or next to the tank

Confucius

The reason for this is that the tank usually is in the place where most of the damage is. This can be an attack around the boss or an attack that damages everyone directly in front of the boss, usually in a conal/wide line shape, similar to the pink area in the picture. When you stand behind the boss, you won’t get that extra damage in your face, so you will only need to deal with the mechanics that are designed to be survivable.

Learn and pay attention to mechanics

Regular enemies and bosses always telegraph their attacks, avoid standing in damaging areas and be ready to dodge or block when needed. When you’re doing harder content, take some time to read guides or watch videos about dungeon mechanics. Knowing what to expect will make the experience much more enjoyable. Communication is key, if you’re unsure about something or need help, don’t hesitate to ask questions.

Get ready to learn

In harder content, failure is an inevitable condition of success. If it doesn’t go well the first time, don’t get discouraged, learn from your mistakes and try again

When you are attacked by something, don’t run away

The reason for this is that when you run away the tank can not always taunt which is attacking you and thus it keeps attacking you. Go near the tank so they can take this over from you. Also, unless you are attacked by an elite add or a whole horde of enemies, the healer should be able to out-heal the adds on you.

Ressurection is DDs job

The reason for this is that the tank takes everything that does damage to them. When they are reviving someone they get often stunned or can get more damage than they are able to take in the time it takes for them to revive someone. For the healer, it is the same. When a healer is reviving someone they can not heal others. When a DD is reviving someone there is less or no damage to the boss, but at least everyone stays safe.
